Second Hand Original Model 66 Target Rifle
Indoor 10 metre target shooting has always been a demanding sport, and specialised target grade equipment is a pre-requisite. But whilst today’s top match rifles invariably utilise pneumatic technology, where recoilless performance is effortlessly achieved, there have been some intriguing spring-powered designs available over the years that have challenged the laws of physics.
One such airgun is the Original model 66, and it’s a gun that still can’t fail to impress. Original/ Mayer Grammelspacher based the design on the famous Giss idea, but amended it to their own use. The original Giss design features two opposing pistons that both compress air, as they move along linked teeth.
6FT/LBS REQUIRED
With only low energy levels required for indoor target work however, Original only needed one of the pistons to compress air. The other purely acts as a counter weight/action. The idea is to all but eliminate recoil, and with this model deliberately set-up to produce power in the region of 6ft/lbs, that job is made a bit easier. The end result is a stunningly effective, totally recoilless firing cycle. The Model 66 was made between 1974-1983 and the featured example here sports serial number 7316831. I have been unable to find any definitive register, but my estimate based on stock features and adverts from the period, places the date of manufacture around the mid to late ‘70’s.
SIGHTS & TRIGGER
Indoor target shooting utilises open dioptre-style sights, and the Model 66 comes very well appointed, with a fully adjustable unit. Earlier versions sported the Micro Dioptre 60 rear sight, which had an altogether more curvaceous profile, yet the sight shown here is still of extremely high quality- just a little more angular.
Other features that really set this rifle apart, are the substantial barrel shroud, which can be slid off if required, and that rather lovely full match stock. An adjustable breech bolt and a full barrel lock also add to the air of quality, and it really is a thorough design. Match guns need top flight trigger units, and this Original 66 doesn’t disappoint in this department either, offering pull weights that can be set to below four ounces!
